Cyclone Speedway

  • Application : Circular Platform
  • Products : Fibergrate 1” molded grating with FGI and Corvex resins, Dynaform structural shapes and handrail

Overview :

Ontario Place, located along the Lake Ontario waterfront in Toronto, Canada, first opened its doors in 1971. The park was built as a showcase to represent the Province of Ontario. Ontario Place was built on three man-made islands spread over 96 acres. Throughout the years, Ontario Place has transformed into a park with award winning attractions appealing to family members of all ages.

Problem :

When building the Cyclone Speedway ride at Ontario Place, the design and engineering teams wanted to construct a circular walkway around the ride that would easily enable riders to enter and exit the cars while still on the moving track. Their goal was to create a safe, maintenance-free walkway.

Solution :

The entire speedway was built using Fibergrate’s FRP materials; specifically grating, handrail and structural shapes. All of the grating used for the project was 1” deep, 1-1/2” square mesh molded grating. Alternating light gray FGI molded panels and dark gray Corvex® panels created an appealing pattern for the platform. The entrance to the ride also features one yellow Corvex® panel to provide safe and eye-catching access to the speedway. ISOFR dark gray structural shapes support the entire structure and yellow handrail used along the edge of the platform offers additional safety for riders during entry and exit.

Fibergrate was chosen for this application after demonstration of superior quality materials and availability of our products, as well as the value added services that we offer to our customers. In addition to meeting their safety and maintenance needs, Fibergrate exceeded the expectations of the project team at Ontario Place by creating a walkway that was also very aesthetically pleasing.

Wild Water Kingdom Pedestrian Bridge

  • Application : Pedestrian Bridge
  • Products : Aqua Grate® Grating, Stair Treads, Dynaform® Structural Shapes

Overview :

On 100 acres of Natural Park land is Canada’s largest water park, Wild Water Kingdom. Over 3 million visitors have passed through the park since its opening in 1986. The park features a number of attractions including fourteen water slides, two giant hot tubs, two miniature golf courses, batting cages, bumper boats, a rock climbing wall and the 6,000 square foot Caribbean Cove. However, the best feature of this park is the Fibergrate pedestrian bridge!

Problem :

Winding rivers throughout the park lends to the tropical atmosphere, but also creates some logistical challenges. Add to this the potential for slips and falls due to the large amounts of water in the park, and you have the makings of one big washout! For the safety and comfort of visitors, a non-slip but gentle for bare feet material was needed. Constant exposure to the elements would cause wood to rot and splinter and metal conducts heat, causing the surface to get very hot.

Solution :

The corrosion resistant, non-conductive, slip resistant features of Fibergrate’s Aqua Grate® pultruded grating, stair treads, and Dynaform® structural shapes had Fibergrate riding the wave of success. The aesthetic appeal and low maintenance pedestrian bridge has certainly made Fibergrate a star attraction!

Henry Doorly Zoo

  • Application : Walkways, Grating Support, Movable Seabed
  • Products : Fiberplate® 1-1/2” Deep, 1-1/2” Molded Grating, 6” Dynaform® Structural Angle

Overview :

In 1995, Fibergrate provided the FRP structural products which were used in the construction of The City of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo’s New Kingdom of the Sea Aquarium. The 71,000 square foot aquarium includes a broad range of species and various aquatic habitats for public viewing.

Problem :

As any of the exhibits would be underwater, the grating and structural products used also had to be resistant to the corrosive effects of a saltwater environment. Also, in conjunction with
a number of access walkways the aquarium needed exhibits that required structural components offering a combination of durability, strength and low cost.

Solution :

Fibergrate® 1-1/2” deep, 1-1/2” square mesh Corvex® molded grating was chosen to form all of the aquarium’s walkways and to provide sand filter support for each exhibit, including the aquarium’s 850,000 gallon shark tank. The grating was elevated with concrete bricks and covered by a fine thermoplastic screen material, on top of which sand, rock and coral were placed. In addition to structural support, the grating provides a realistic appearance and serves as a giant sand filter for the exhibit. A combination of molded grating and Fiberplate® was also used to form a gate between the shark tank and the holding area where the fish are kept for treatment.

Corvex® grating was installed atop the aquarium’s exhibit tanks, providing sure footing for employees caring for the exhibits. In addition, Fiberplate® and Dynaform® structural angles served as structural supports for the moveable floor in the aquarium’s interactive wave motion exhibit. Structural shapes and plating were also used for the access doors in large exhibits and underwater signs in the shark tank. Outside of the aquarium, grating was installed in the pygmy hippo exhibit, in the cages holding large cats and in the baboon cages.

Los Angeles Zoo Tank Platform

  • Application : Zoo Tank Platform
  • Products : Dynaform® structural shapes, Corvex molded grating and stair treads, Dynarail® handrail and ladders.

Overview :

Each year 1.4 million visitors pass through Los Angeles Zoo gates to visit the more than 1,200 animals that call the zoo home. The 113-acre zoo opened in Griffith Park in 1966 and was the fourth zoo to serve the city.

Problem :

The sea lion pools at the Los Angeles Zoo were suffering from a bacteria problem. To solve the problem the zoo maintenance and construction crew added a fractionator protein skimmer to oxygenate and filter the pools. An elevated structure, specified with a 6,000 pound loading requirement, was needed to hold the heavy fractionator tank behind the scenes.

Solution :

Fibergrate’s products had been successfully installed throughout the Los Angeles Zoo in the past, so the construction team was aware of the benefits of using fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP). Fibergrate was able design a platform structure to hold the fractionator tank which was discovered to actually weigh 11,200 pounds!

The Los Angeles Zoo’s maintenance and construction crew were able to easily install the lightweight platform themselves, which saved valuable time and money since they needed no contractors or welders. The end user was also surprised to learn that the FRP platform was capable of supporting almost twice the weight originally specified. Finally, the maintenance crew was relieved to have another Fibergrate structure that would provide many years of rust-free service without additional painting or maintenance. FRP sealed the deal for this platform.

Silverton Casino Aquarium

  • Application : Aquarium Platform
  • Products : Aqua Grate® T1215 pultruded grating, Corvex® molded grating and stair treads, Dynaform® structural shapes

Overview :

Silverton Hotel & Casino located in Las Vegas, Nevada, recently opened an expansion that houses several large saltwater aquariums. The main aquarium at the hotel holds 117,000 gallons of saltwater and is home to over 4,000 fish and three species of sharks and stingrays. Two underwater shows take place inside this aquarium that provides easy visibility to guests through its large curved windows and octagonal shape.

Problem :

The large aquarium needed a ramp leading to the service platform at the top of the tank and also an ocean floor platform inside of the tank. Because this is a saltwater aquarium, metal could not be used inside the tank. The designers were in need of a product that could stand up to the corrosive saltwater environment and provide safety for divers and maintenance workers around the tank’s exterior.

Solution :

Fibergrate was able to provide a variety of FRP materials that met all of the specifications for this aquarium attraction. Fibergrate’s covered grating was used to construct a ramp leading to the tank’s service platform. Aqua Grate® T1215 pultruded grating, Corvex® molded grating and stair treads, along with Dynaform® structural shapes were used in combination to create a custom service platform around the top of the aquarium. This platform allows divers to safely enter and exit the tank for underwater shows. Molded grating and pedestals were also used on the ocean floor of the tank to create platforms where coral lies allowing for water filtration throughout the entire habitat.

The non-corrosive elements of Fibergrate’s products will hold up in this harsh saltwater environment. Divers and maintenance workers can safely walk along the exterior tank platform without slip concerns and the long life, low maintenance of Fibergrate’s products means spending more time with the fish instead of worrying about the platform. While there may be daily diving shows in the aquarium, Fibergrate’s performance is outlasting the competition making Fibergrate’s dive into Vegas a success!

The Ranch at Possum Kingdom

  • Application : Collection Basin
  • Products : Fibergrate Molded Grating 1-1/2” Square Mesh, 1-1/2” Deep

Overview :

The Ranch is a leisure community located on Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas. It offers a wide range of amenities for its residents and visitors. One of The Ranch’s many amenities is its resort style, four spa swimming pool, complete with imported boulders from the Ozarks and cascading waterfalls.

Problem :

A grating product was needed for the collection basin in which pumps circulated water. The Ranch wanted a product that would require little maintenance and would stand up in the wet conditions

Solution :

When Manchester & Associates, a Fibergrate representative, contacted The Ranch at Possum Kingdom, they were quick to see the benefits of Fibergrate molded grating. Corrosion resistance and ease of cutting were two reasons for choosing
Fibergrate® IFR molded grating for its state-of-the-art lakeside facility

Fibergrate’s 1-1/2” deep, 1-1/2” square mesh molded grating was used at the base of the last and largest waterfall in the pool. Despite the fact that the rock work surrounding the pool was left in its uneven, natural state, the Fibergrate molded grating was easily fit into place. The grating’s green color also blends well with the natural surrounding rock work and landscape. Because the grating is corrosion resistant with the color built in, the grating will last for years to come. Fibergrate is proud to be a part of this exclusive development.

Medicine Center Shower Room

  • Application : Shower Drain Covers
  • Products : Aqua Grate® Pultruded Grating

Overview :

Tom Landry Sports Medicine and Research Center is located in Dallas, Texas. It is home to many athletes during their strenuous off time of rest and rehabilitation.

Overview :

Slips and falls in shower areas can be hazardous and costly, especially when you are a professional athlete. That is why the Tom Landry Sports Medicine Center needed a safe and slip-resistant surface installed over the shower drains in the shower room.

Solution :

The facility chose Fibergrate’s Aqua Grate® pultruded pedestrian grating to cover
the drains in their training center locker rooms. The drains varied in length and
were approximately 10” in width. Because the drains were narrow in width, 6” tie
bar spacing was used for the 1” deep pultruded grating. The Aqua Grate® T1210
grating with its standard silica sand grit provides a safe, slip-resistant surface, yet is
gentle on the players’ feet.

The gray, built-in color also blends well with the shower walls and floor and will
not require future painting by the maintenance crew. Because Fibergrate offers
corrosion resistant products, they won’t have to worry about scraping corroded
grating either. Let Fibergrate Composite Structures solve your flooring or structural
requirements.

Pontoon Boardwalk – Tanner Springs Park

  • Application : Pontoon Boardwalk
  • Products : Safe-T-Span® ISOFR pultruded T2515 grating

Overview :

Tanner Springs Park is located in Portland’s River District. It is the second of four parks being developed for this neighborhood, also referred to as North Park Square. This urban wetland was designed to reveal the natural landscape that once existed in this area just north of downtown Portland.

Problem :

Portland Parks and Recreation was in need of a product that could be sheathed over wooden frames to create a pontoon boardwalk in Tanner Springs Park. The customer wanted to construct a boardwalk with materials that would provide safety for pedestrians, protect the habitat and require little or no maintenance. The Portland Parks and Recreation also required a product that was ADA compliant.

Solution :

The Tanner Springs Park pontoon boardwalk was fabricated using Fibergrate’s Safe-T-Span® ISOFR pultruded T2515 grating. The lightweight properties of FRP enabled the grating to be used in conjunction with wood to create this floating dock. The FRP portion of this dock is resistant to corrosion caused by water and other outdoor elements, allowing for little or no maintenance over its long life-cycle. Safe-T-Span’s® slip-resistant surface provides safety for pedestrians, as well as a comfortable walking surface even for bare feet. The grating provides a 25% open area, allowing light to flow to the natural habitat below the dock, which was an important element for designers who wanted to create a home for wetland creatures.

Fibergrate’s Safe-T-Span® grating is also ADA compliant which was a requirement of Portland Parks and Recreation Department. Grating Pacific fabricated the grating with hatches, requested by the user, to allow for easy access below the grating surface. The quality of products and services offered by Fibergrate, as well as our ability to meet and exceed the expectations of the customer made the Tanner Springs Park pontoon boardwalk a successful application.

Horseshoe Lake Boat Dock

  • Application : Boat Dock
  • Products : Fibergrate AquaGrate® Pultruded T1210 Grating and Dynaform Structural Shapes

Overview :

Horseshoe Lake is located in the Haliburton Highlands in Ontario, Canada, located about two hours north of Toronto. Haliburton Highlands is a region full of lakes, rivers and many other natural attractions.

Problem :

Heavy maintenance and yearly preserving measures can help extend the life of wooden docks, but eventually traditional wooden docks become troublesome as they begin to splinter and rot after time in the outdoor elements. The customer was interested in constructing a boat dock with materials that would provide a long life cycle requiring virtually no maintenance and also blend with the beautiful natural surroundings.

Solution :

The dock was fabricated using Fibergrate’s AquaGrate® pultruded T1210 grating and structural shapes as well as a ladder at the end of the dock. This entire FRP dock is resistant to the water and outdoor elements and requires virtually no maintenance for years to come. The lightweight properties of FRP are ideal for designing structures in an aquatic environment. The grating provides a 12% open area, allowing light to flow to the natural habitat below the dock while the slip-resistant grating provides a comfortable walking surface even for bare feet.

While the long-lasting beauty of the dock is evident, much of the structure is below the surface of the water as two structural supports, or cribs, were built in the water utilizing 6” wide flange columns and grating. The wide flange beams created posts,
and molded grating was attached vertically to the posts to create the two box-like structures that were filled with large rocks for stability. Once the cribs were in place, the 8’ x 20’ dock and the 4’ wide, 10’ long ramp were attached. The customer, very pleased with the results, has enjoyed using extra time in the summer boating and fishing rather than maintaining a boat dock.

Nautica Condominiums Boardwalk

  • Application : Boardwalk Decking
  • Products : Fibergrate – Rigidex® II

Overview :

“Spanning nearly four acres along the posh residential riverfront in Miami is the Nautica, a seven-story property featuring townhouses, villas, condominiums, and lofts. Newly constructed in 2003, each unit features a cityscape or waterfront view through floor-to-ceiling glass doors, along with many other luxury amenities.”

Problem :

The Nautica Miami Beach Condominiums were searching for bay front decking to meet Army Corp of Engineer and ADA guidelines. They found Fibergrate’s Rigidex® II product which also provided a safe, attractive and low maintenance solution.

Solution :

Fibergrate’s Rigidex® II has an open area of 46% and exceeds guidelines set forth by the Army Corp of engineers who require a minimum open area of 43%. The open area consideration is an important factor in protecting the sea grass as it allows light penetration through the dock. In addition, our golf tee-shaped bearing bars provide a minimum opening of 1/2” so it also meets the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines making it an excellent choice for public area applications. The grating was placed on traditional wood supports and blended well with the natural surroundings desired for this upscale location. With the corrosion resistance of the Rigidex product, this decking could outlast the mortgages on the condominiums.

Dock and Boat Lift

  • Application : Dock & Boat Lift
  • Products : : Ecograte® Dark Gray Molded Grating, Corvex® Resin System, and Hold Down Clips

Overview :

Green Turtle Cay is an island among the Abaco Out Islands in The Bahamas.
The island lies 160 miles off the South Florida Coast. It was named after the
abundance of green turtles that inhabited the area. A homeowner on the
island was looking to build a multi-purpose dock and boat lift that could
withstand storm surges, often found in this type of coastal environment.

Problem :

Aside from wanting a multi-purpose dock and boat lift that would provide access to the Sea of Abaco and could withstand storm surges, the homeowner also required a decking surface with at least a 43% open area. This meets with the guidelines of the Army Corps of Engineers that are in place to protect seagrass beds found below docks, in shallow marine environments.

Solution :

Fibergrate was able to meet the requirements of the homeowner with Ecograte® molded grating. The 46% open area of Ecograte exceeds the 43% minimum open area guideline set forth by the Army Corps of Engineers. Fibergrate’s Ecograte product also proved to exceed the expectations of the homeowner! The Aquagrit surface of Ecograte provides a bare-foot friendly, slip resistant surface. Fibergrate’s Corvex® resin system will also protect the Ecograte decking surface from corrosion and will last, with very little maintenance, in this saltwater environment. The features and benefits of Fibergrate’s FRP products will help ensure the owner’s investment for years to come. This project generated quite a bit of interest around the community for its aesthetics and its unique application involving the NO-Profile lift, which conceals all mechanical components of boat lifts underneath the dock.
