Battery Storage and Charging Room

Overview :

A battery storage room can be a complicated project. In order for it to work properly many things must be in play. Well-ventilated, spark-resistant, non- conducting battery racks/stands, and charger racking are just a few of the things that must be taken into consideration. After preparing the proper stands, a facility in Wisconsin took it a step further by seeking a corrosion-resistant shelving material.

Problem :

A battery storage and charging room is notorious for severe sulfuric acid conditions which rapidly break down most structural materials used to hold batteries. In a facility in Wisconsin, safety and corrosion resistance were two important factors in choosing Fibergrate products instead of wood which quickly disintegrates in such hostile environments.

Solution :

In this facility, shelving was designed from Chemtred® panels chosen for its durable nosing which can withstand heavy wear caused by battery rotation. Floor drains were also covered with Chemgrate® 1” x 4” rectangular mesh grating. Thanks to the corrosion-resistant properties of Chemgrate® and Chemtreds®, acid is easily removed from the shelves and drains using a simple washdown procedure. Fibergrate’s products have created a long- term, low-maintenance solution in the harsh corrosive environment.


CXY Chemicals Unloading Platform

Overview :

The CXY Chemicals facility operates an unloading platform at one of International Paper’s paper mills.

Problem :

CXY Chemicals needed to bring their rail car platforms into compliance for potentially hazardous material spills.

Solution :

CXY Chemicals installed spill containment areas at the sodium chlorate unloading terminal. 1-1/2” deep RIGIDEX®I Moltruded® grating was used to provide safe walking surfaces beside and between the rails with 6” Dynaform® ISOFR channel installed to support the grating. Both the customer and CW&W Construction, the contractor for the project, were happy with Fibergrate’s service and materials and are interested in other products for additional modifications to their facilities.


PPG Industries Chemical Facility

  • Products : Fibergrate® 1-1/2” Deep, 1-1/2” Square Mesh Molded Grating

Overview :

PPG Industries Chemical plant produces more than 50 million pounds of specialty chemicals for manufacturers around the globe. Chemicals produced at this facility include Chloroformates (used in pesticides, artificial sweeteners and pharmaceuticals) and acid chlorides and carbonates (used as solvents and alkylating agents in paints and other coating products).

Problem :

Due to the chemical activity in the processing areas, corrosion resistance is a major concern for PPG’s purchasing department and maintenance personnel.

Solution :

Fibergrate worked with PPG to analyze existing corrosive environments to determine the right solution for their needs. Vi-Corr® vinyl ester molded grating was chosen for its high corrosion resistance and ease of cutting. Fibergrate’s fabrication services were utilized to cut approximately 3,000 square feet of 1-1/2” deep, 1-1/2” square mesh grating for walkways and platforms around the processing area.
